If you're getting a tattoo in Merritt Island or the Space Coast, proper aftercare is essential. Getting a new tattoo is only half the process—proper aftercare is what ensures your tattoo heals correctly, looks vibrant, and lasts for years to come. Whether it’s your first tattoo or your tenth, following the right aftercare routine is essential to avoid infection, fading, and damage to the artwork.
A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound. The skin has been penetrated thousands of times, making it vulnerable to bacteria, irritation, and improper healing.
Without proper care, you risk:
Infection
Excessive scabbing
Ink loss or fading
Blurred or distorted lines
Taking care of your tattoo properly protects both your health and the quality of the work.
Your artist will cover your tattoo with a bandage or protective wrap immediately after the session.
Keep the bandage on for 2–4 hours (or as instructed by your artist)
If using a second-skin wrap (like Saniderm), leave it on for 24–72 hours
After removing the bandage:
Wash your hands thoroughly
Gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap
Do NOT scrub—use your fingertips only
Use a clean paper towel (not a bath towel)
Gently pat the area dry
This is when your tattoo begins forming a protective layer and may start to feel dry or tight.
Wash the tattoo 2–3 times per day
Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or approved aftercare ointment
Do NOT over-apply—your skin needs to breathe
Light redness
Mild swelling
Slight oozing or plasma
Beginning of peeling
This is completely normal.
Your tattoo will begin to peel, similar to a sunburn.
DO NOT pick or scratch
Let scabs and peeling skin fall off naturally
Continue washing and moisturizing lightly
Lightly slap or tap the area
Apply a small amount of lotion
To ensure proper healing, avoid the following:
No swimming (pools, ocean, lakes)
No baths or soaking
Showers are fine
Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight
UV rays can damage fresh ink
Avoid tight clothes rubbing against the tattoo
Especially important for areas like ribs, legs, and arms
Avoid heavy sweating and gym contact for the first few days
Keep the area clean if you do exercise
Peeling and flaking
Mild redness
Slight itching
Excessive redness spreading outward
Severe swelling or pain
Yellow/green discharge
Fever or chills
If something feels off, don’t ignore it.
Once healed, your tattoo still needs care to stay looking sharp.
Use lotion regularly to maintain skin health
Apply SPF 30+ whenever exposed to sunlight
This is the #1 way to prevent fading
Healthy skin keeps tattoos looking better longer
Proper aftercare is the difference between a tattoo that looks great for a few months and one that looks great for a lifetime. Following these steps will help your tattoo heal smoothly, retain its detail, and stay vibrant for years to come.
